About myself. I am an English midwife currently living in Switzerland. Following a degree in social science and general nurse training I qualified as a midwife in 1993. After qualifying I worked for many years as an independent midwife in London where I was able to offer complete maternity care to women, attending births at home and in hospital. In 2001 I moved to Switzerland where I worked for over 2 years in a free standing birthing centre (Geburtshaus Oberburg). Currently I am back in independent practice and enjoy being able to care for women during their pregnancy, labour and early days with their new baby. In addition to my clinical work I also teach part time at the Berne School of Midwifery. I have lectured internationally on many issues concerned with midwifery and have also published a wide range of articles. I attend regular study days to update my knowledge and have good contacts with local hospitals and obstetricians. I speak English and German, and have two children.
Pregnancy and childbirth is a life-changing event. I believe that a positive birth experience lays down the foundation for a smooth transition to parenthood, and leads to confident parenting. When women are treated as equal partners in the process, have access to information and a sense of control over events; birth can be a hugely empowering experience. My aim is to encourage women and their partners to consider what is important for them and to support them in the choices that they make concerning their care. I place great emphasis on taking the time to find out what women and their partners want and to tailor your care to your individual needs. I believe that when women are able to build up a trusting relationship with their midwife, that it is then often easier for women to relax during labour and therefore improve their chances of having a straightforward birth. My aim is to help you to build your confidence in your own abilities to give birth and to parent instinctively while providing you with the knowledge to make informed choices at every stage. |
